According to Virgil’s accounts, it was founded by the mythical Dardanus, who lost his helmet (Corys) in battle—from which the city’s name is believed to derive. The city was founded by the Etruscans more than 3,000 years ago. In the 8th century B.C., it became a powerful lucumonia under the name Curtum. Later conquered by the Romans, it established itself as a free commune in the 12th century, before being ceded to Florence.
